Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to characterize the Folk Music Festival “Mikołajki Folkowe” in the context of the protection of intangible cultural heritage. The introductory part presents basic information on the genesis of folk music as a genre inspired by musical folklore, along with the development of the folk festival movement. The main part of the publication is devoted to one such festival – Mikołajki Folkowe. This is the oldest folk festival in Poland, held continuously since 1991 in Lublin. The author analyzes whether and how this cyclical musical event fits into the strategy of protection of the intangible cultural heritage according to the provisions of the UNESCO Convention of 2003 adopted by Poland.
