Summary/Abstract: The novel Portnoy’s Complaint has been appraised as one of the best novels of the 20th century. The protagonist presents the author’s repressed desires and complaints due to the Jewish religious dogma. The work is suitable for psychoanalytic analysis because it is built on a powerful combination of the main element of psychoanalysis, the conscious and the subconscious, or consciousness and the unconscious (according to Freud). Therefore, often we refer to this method as the therapeutic method, as the need of the writer to express and get to the surface of the repressed part of his life, complexes, traumas, desires, and initial guilt. Based on these, the author puts his character in front of a psychiatrist, as in front of a priest, where he confesses his whole life from childhood to his many sins resulting from his childhood phase.
