Summary/Abstract: The present study focuses on the development of the ritual of consecration of Byzantine antimensia. Initially, they were consecrated by a bishop as part of the consecration ritual of a new church, which includes the Holy Table. Records of a stand- alone ritual date back from the 14th century, as found in Mss. 149- 104 (94) and 371-48 (208) from the Library of the Patriarchate of Alexandria (14th-15th centuries), Sinaiticus gr. 1006 (15th century), Sinaiticus gr. 974 (1510 AD), Sinaiticus gr. 993 (16th century) or Barberini gr. 390 (ca. 1575-1580). Because the antimensia are portable altars, their stand-alone consecration ritual mainly follows the consecration ritual of the Holy Table, with a few minor differences or additions.
