Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to examine, interpret, and explain the Hungarian legal regulations related to the patients' right to self-determination. The right to self-determination is one of the most extensively regulated patient right in the Healthcare Act. This right is of utmost importance, since it – together with the right to information – assists the patients in being able to make responsible decisions regarding their treatment. The article presents what the right to self-determination means, outlines its limitations, and also addresses who is entitled to give consent to healthcare interventions. The examination of the right to self-determination is considered a current topicactual, as evidenced by the legal disputes related to it in the courts.
