Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence is on everybody’s lips and it represents one of the greatest research accomplishments in history. It is a highly controversial subject, difficult to understand and process for individuals, regardless of the level of education. Fully comprehending that a computer, an informatic system can learn on its own and make decisions accordingly is hard to understand even for those who use such concepts and programs. In terms of scope and impact, Artificial Intelligence, from our perspective, stands right next to nuclear fission, having the same immense potential to revolutionize our way of living for the better, but when out of control, it is capable of destroying the world as we know it. For a better understanding of this phenomenon we will try to clarify the basic concepts that revolve around Artificial Intelligence, and then explore its fascinating potential, as well as the challenges and implications associated with the use of this remarkable technology, both from a general perspective and from the standpoint of law enforcement agencies that ensure public order and safety, including in terms of forensics, as a branch of criminal law and procedural law that deals with the scientific part of these institutions’, namely the discovery and investigation of crimes.
