Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to demonstrate the differences in the themes and scale of research on urban and rural areas from the mid-20th century to the present. The apparent variations in ana-lytical approaches stemmed from the available research tools, scientists’ interests, the needs of the socio-economic sphere, as well as attainable statistical data or even knowledge about the needs of local communities. In the development of cities and villages, the organization and management of these units have changed, with significant involvement of society. Nowadays, the society, once less aware, desires to participate in spatial and strategic planning processes. The article places particular emphasis on contemporary changes in researchers’ perspectives on the development of these units, il-lustrated through examples of studies conducted in urban and rural areas. The article includes a sum-mary in the form of a tabulated compilation presenting the scope of research in a historical context.
