The Activities of the Balearic Public Broadcaster IB3 and the Catalan Language

Summary/Abstract: The Balearic Islands, belonging to the area of Catalan culture and language, are an essential element in shaping the Catalan-speaking communicative community. As in many other autonomous communities, there is a public service broadcaster in the islands. Its strength, popularity and programs have a potential impact on the linguistic situation in the region. Therefore, it is worth looking at how it operates and what it offers on radio or television channels. The article aims to show the status of public media in the Balearic Islands, their role in promoting the Catalan language, their popularity, and their problems. The primary research method is a system analysis of the Spanish media market. The instability in the management and funding of Balearic public media does not contribute to their popularity among media users. A weak position on the market may fail to carry out missionary tasks, including the popularizing of the Catalan language among the inhabitants of the Balearic Islands.
