Summary/Abstract: In the past few years, researches on the prerequisites for multilingual interaction between Estonians and Finns have been carried out. 'e relation between Estonian and Finnish, two closely related languages, is surveyed through testing how well the cognate language can be understood on the basis of one’s mother tongue – that is, without intentionally learning the cognate language. 'e aim of the study depicted in this article is to contemplate how Finnish-speaking students translate Estonian sentences into their #rst language. Other main issues are what kind of strategies the students in question apply to their process of transposing meanings, as well as how important the role of the so called false friends actually is in this process.
