Finnish verbs mennä ‘go’ and lähteä ‘leave’ as the challenge for Estonian learners of Finnish

Summary/Abstract: Although the Estonian and Finnish languages are closely related languages, the Estonian verb minema and Finnish verb mennä have developed in di-erent directions. In Finnish there have remained structurally two parallel paradigms: mennä: menen and lähteä: lähden. On the contemporary Estonian on the other hand there are two verbs in one paradigm in complementary distribution: minema: lähen. Di-erent paradigms are challenging for Estonian learners of Finnish, they cause problems both in learning and in the target language use. So far there have not been enough research results available to learners and teachers about how native speakers on Finnish use verbs mennä and lähteä. In this paper we focus on frequent constructions and collocations of the verbs mennä and lähteä in standard Finnish. We are looking for an answer to the following questions: 1) what kind of constructions of the verbs mennä and lähteä are frequent; 2) are there contexts where mennä and lähteä are synonyms; 3) are there collocations involving only one of these verbs?
