Summary/Abstract: This article examines political communication through the prism of the relational and digital world paradigm, relative to the traditional (positivist) understanding of the functions of communication between different political actors. It reviews the main definitions and assumptions about the functions of political communication today and considers questions about the meaning, language, structure, and process of political communication. The thesis is developed that the availability of modern technology is changing the tasks, tools and actors that shape the nature of political communication. The paper also outlines new fields for the study of political communication, such as the importance of interpretation, the functions of language, and changing media behaviour, as fundamental mechanisms of communication between politicians and audiences.
