Summary/Abstract: The study examines “Zara. Pages from a Diary”, combining Freud’s theory of the “dark continent” with the genre of the diary to build a psychoanalytic matrix through which the figure of the woman can be unraveled. The article traces the functions and uses of the diary genre in its post-Revolutionary literary interpretation, as well as the narrative model of “Zara” and its relation to the bildungsroman, thus showing the continuity of the work and the genre to the trends of the period. The analysis presents the significant difference in the patterns of time flow outside and inside the person. While the former is based on the events and facts of a life, the inner time guides the individual and materializes our inner self.
