Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the views on modern politics of two influential critics of modernity, Leo Strauss and Alasdair MacIntyre. In their work, these two thinkers took a critical view of modern political philosophy and considered the pre-modern philosophical tradition to be superior. For this reason they are often juxtaposed. MacIntyre's work has also been the subject of criticism by writers who have been influenced by Strauss's intellectual legacy, such as Thomas S. Hibbs and Émile Perreau-Saussine. The criticism suggests a fundamental difference in the way Strauss and MacIntyre view modern politics - should the modern state be considered to be a political entity? Building on Hibbs and Perreau-Saussine's critique, this article discusses this disagreement by linking it to the broader context of MacIntyre's and Strauss's philosophy.
