Summary/Abstract: The practice of surrogate motherhood differs from other techniques of human reproduction in that it involves a third person, a woman who, by becoming a gestational (and, in the case of traditional surrogacy, biological) mother, undertakes to give up the child she has carried and given birth to. Despite the controversy surrounding this practice, some European countries are determined to legalise it. However, there is strong opposition from various groups and movements. In Spain, despite many attempts, this practice has not been legalised, not only because of the opposition of the Catholic Church, pro-life movements, and Christian-oriented NGOs, but above all because of the active participation of feminist organisations in public debates and their organised campaign against this practice, which, according to many feminists, instrumentalises women's bodies and treats children as objects.
