Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the study is an investigation of the perception of the acceptability of se- lected colloquial lexical innovations (the verbs zadziać się (to happen [once]), zadziewać się (to hap- pen [continuously or repeatedly]), ogarnąć (się) and ogarniać (się) (a broad range of meanings, for example, to cope with something, to understand something, etc.) by native speakers of Polish, on the basis of their idiolects. The study combined two methods: an analysis of online and printed sources, looking for examples of the use of these verbs in context, and a survey conducted among Polish speakers of various educational backgrounds and professions. The results show that these verbs are gaining popularity in the media, yet speakers’ attitudes towards them vary considerably. However, these lexical innovations are mostly perceived as acceptable only in colloquial Polish, which reflects the respondents’ language awareness.
