Summary/Abstract: The author points out the reasons for NATO’s interest in energy security, showing that assuring energy supply may not be a straightforward military challenge, but it clearly has a security dimension. First, he mentions some of the reasons for which NATO allies approach energy security with considerable hesitation. Then, he writes about the fact that the Alliance has managed over the years to develop an agreed “aquis” on energy security, tailored to NATO’s specific capabilities and resting on three main pillars: dialogue and sharing of information and intelligence among allies, projecting stability and critical energy infrastructure protection. In the end of the article, he highlights the need for a more systematic approach in order for NATO to better focus its energy security activities, noting that the Alliance must develop a culture of political discussion which is not confined to issues that may involve it militarily, but which also includes issues of broader political relevance.
