Summary/Abstract: Cognitive warfare has a long history, as people have always tried to influence others to pursue their own interests or ambitions. However, it was only in the 21st century that it was noticed that, with the developing influence of social media, methods and techniques of cognitive warfare are increasingly used by states or non-state organizations in order to gain supporters or cause social divisions by sending contradictory information. Currently, cognitive warfare is conducted in order to shape social views on such matters as politics, economy, or military and achieve the desired “behavioral change”, i.e. action beneficial to the attacking entity. The article presents definitional problems related to cognitive warfare, determines the methods, goals, forms of counte- racting cognitive warfare and ways of conducting it, and also indicates the im- portance of shaping social attitudes in the contemporary security environ- ment. Therefore, the aim of the article is to present the importance of cognitive warfare in shaping social attitudes.
