Summary/Abstract: The educational manager, before assuming the management position, has been in the environment he will manage. Many of the activities and commitments are painfully familiar to him as a participant or direct performer. The new and unknown is the assumption of managerial responsibility. This changes his profile of pedagogue, teacher and performer to that of organizer, administrator, manager and leader. The article examines the interrelationship between three aspects of successful directorship – the characteristics of an effective leader in general; the director's personal knowledge and skills; the director's personal qualities. The three selected aspects show how personal qualities, skills and experience are the basis for good and effective management.
