Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role of president in the Latin American presidential systems and the relation between presidentialism and democratic governance. First, it resumes the different approaches towards the research on the presidential systems with a special focus on the debates about the possibilities of democratic consolidation within them. Secondly, it deals with the factors influencing the role of president in these political systems, especially with respect to the congress. These specific factors are: the electoral systems for presidential elections, the presidential re-election, the presidents’ legislative and non-legislative powers and finally the nature of the party systems. Each of them is discussed and demonstrated on the Latin American cases. The executive-legislative relation is considered to be a key element in the functioning of the presidential systems.
