The Rise of the Chinese Yuan – Evolution, Determinants, Prospects

Summary/Abstract: Since the beginning of the new millennium, the Chinese yuan has increased its popularity and established itself as an increasingly important currency in an international context. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the PRC currency and its evolution as an international currency. The purpose of the study is to trace the impact of various factors on the use of the yuan worldwide and to present predictions for its future. The following groups of factors are analyzed sequentially – economic factors; financial reforms; geopolitical factors. The article also draws attention to the prospects for the Chinese yuan, including the expansion of its use in international trade transactions, the possibility of the development of Chinese financial markets and the growth of its share in public and private foreign exchange reserves. Despite challenges related to accountability and financial liberalization, the renminbi has the potential to increase and strengthen its position as an international currency.
