Summary/Abstract: Šoštanj kept up with other towns in Slovenia when it came to its modernization achievements. The first initiative for the modernization of larger towns was the wish to clean the streets for the sake of hygiene and the prevention of infectious and fatal diseases, especially cholera. Later, street lighting came into play. The construction of the public water supply and sewage system in Šoštanj greatly contributed to the modernization and the hygiene of living conditions as well as the image of the square and the town. The construction of the Celje–Velenje railway line in 1891 had a decisive influence on the development of industry. It also improved transport routes and people‘s travel habits. Today, Šoštanj is known for the production of electricity (TEŠ), but the first attempts to use electric current date back to the last decades of the 19th century. All the aforementioned influences of modernization had a decisive influence on the development of trade and industry in Šalek Valley.
