Summary/Abstract: The contribution presents the image of the Roma in the Slovenian folk (especially poetic) tradition, which consists of imaginative descriptions and stories that attribute an ominous character but also an irresistible, mysterious attraction to the members of the Roma ethnic group. It also contains information on the various aspects of these people’s everyday life. In the 19th century, from which most of the examined folk literature originates, the Slovenian intellectuals and historians Ivan Steklasa and Janez Trdina studied and wrote about the Roma as a separate ethnic and social group. Their observations partly coincided and partly diverged from those that had emerged among the common people.
