Potential changes in the current division into voivodeships versus the opinion of school youth from selected regional centres

Summary/Abstract: The article brings the issue of the potential of introducing changes to the current Polish administrative division at the voivodeship level from two perspectives. The first is a review of concepts emerging in the last quarter of a century, assuming a reduction or increase in top -level units. This part summarises arguments for and against changes in the number of Polish voivodeships. Częstochowa, Radom, Koszalin, Słupsk and Kalisz are those that may become new capitals. On the other hand, the cities which may lose this position are Toruń, Kielce, Zielona Góra and Gorzów Wielkopolski. The second perspective concerns the opinion of young people studying in the cities mentioned above. This group is potentially interesting because they were born after the administrative reform and did not know the old system. The study showed that the representatives of the social group in question had relatively little interest in changes in the number of voivodeships. The students’ opinions are only partially consistent with the views presented in the public and scientific debate on the topic. Despite this, most young people agree that their city deserves to be a capital (especially if they live in cities that are already capitals). Students also see the benefits of this status, especially in terms of the inflow of investments and improvement of public infrastructure
