FROM SALVATION TO LIBERATION: LATIN AMERICAN LIBERATION THEOLOGY

Summary/Abstract: The relationship between Marxism and religion is one of the vast polemical research fields. Yet, there are historical experiences of those interpretive schemas going hand by hand where praxis constantly shapes theory. One of those experiences is Liberation Theology in 1960s, which took shape in Latin America, and played a distinctive role in the formations of regional social movements throughout the 1980s. The theology in question essentially addresses a distinctive social movement that responds to the poverty and deprivation in Latin America through the contextual interpretation of Bible with references to Marxism, and has managed to mobilize Christians in rural and urban settlements through grassroot organizations. As a matter of fact, Liberation Theology holds a representative place for both scrutinizing the connection between religion and politics within Latin American context and observing the potential synthesis of the relevant theory with different forms of social movements. From this standpoint, the study examines Liberation Theory based on the social conditions, which have given rise to the movement, historical improvements, theoretical framework, organization models and current situation. Hence, the aim of this comprehensive study is to contribute to the relevant literature, and present one of the left-oriented policy praxis intermingling religion and politics for potential researches.
