Summary/Abstract: The question of the originality of Marin Držić 's dramatic characters in relation to the Roman and Italian models has been posed in numerous historical and critical studies. The answer to this question frequently contains a confusion of levels of analysis of the dramatic character. This is why the present paper proposes a consistent analysis of characters in Držić's Plautian comedies on the central (metatextual) level. The characters from Držić's more or less well preserved comedies (Dundo Maroje, Skup, Arkulin, Tripče de Utolče, Pjerin) are usually compared with the typical characters from Roman, Italian erudite, and Elizabethan comedies (after R. Rosley). It is finnally claimed that the Croatian comedy writer, while creating original characters on the textual level, increased the Renaissance repertory of comic characters on the second (metatextual) level, while basing his characters on a number of contrasts and symmetries in the desire to establish a balance of opposing forces.
