Travel literature: from an attempt to define the genre to Krleža's discourse

Summary/Abstract: A superficial definition of the basic features of the genre and an indiscriminate inclusion of texts within this field mark the scholarly/critical approach to travel literature. The paper represents an attempt to define the basic qualities of travel literature as a non-fictional narrative genre and it verifies the results of this attempt on appropriate literary examples. Travel literature is defined here by means of categories such as explanation (frame), itinerary, the subject of travel accounts, lexicon (catalogue), supplementary thematisation, the story, and the addressee. These claims are subsequently verified on Krleža's travel accounts.
