Summary/Abstract: The Communist regime tried to impose a total control over the Romanian society in the period between 1948 and 1989. Both higher education studies and sport activities were considered main instruments for the construction of the new man. Instrumentalization of sports heroes had been already a practice in Communist Russia and therefore Romania took it as a model. Physical education and sport came under a lot of scrutiny of the political regime, which sought to expand the number of specialists in this field. This article provides an overview of how was set in motion the mechanism of higher education in physical activity field in Romania, starting from a base created in the interwar period in university centres from Bucharest and Cluj. On the grounds of good results for Romanian athletes in international competitions, there had been an increasing interest from foreign students for the Romanian physical education faculties. We are observing a legitimation of educational system with the results of athletes who are also students. The evolution of the sport higher education system was decided at the top of the politics, and the role of Ceauşescu family is argued in this article. Our paper examines how the admission was made in these institutions, how they were reorganized and the context of the development. It highlights aspects of the activity and role of the unique party and effects of the propaganda. The analysis brings in front a number of statistical data on students enrolled, the distribution of specialization, graduation rates, etc.
