Summary/Abstract: Popularization of science and dissemination of knowledge are the basic tasks of scholars, scientists - in the modern world simply referred to generically as people of science - as well as institutions established to conduct scientific activity, including scientific societies. This is an issue that is constantly topical and present in the deliberations of science studies, and increasingly in other social sciences: informatology, bibliology, sociology, philosophy or sciences of social communication and media. All the more noteworthy is the publication, which is the aftermath of two thematically related scientific conferences that were jointly organized, in May and December 2022, by the Council of Scientific Societies at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Committee on Social Communication and Media Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Council for the Popularization of Science at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The person initiating these conferences and cooperating with the above-mentioned institutions is Iwona Hofman, a specialist in the theory of social communication, the history of the media and the relationship between the media and politics, as well as the problems of scientific societies. She has been affiliated with Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin for years, and has been director of the Institute of Social Communication and Media Sciences since 2019. She holds many ministerial positions, including being a member of the Council for Scientific Excellence, chairing both the Council of Scientific Societies and the Committee for Social Communication and Media Sciences, newly established in 2021 within the structures of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Iwona Hofman is also the scientific editor of a peer-reviewed publication.
