Summary/Abstract: In the humanistic variety of mountain studies, the relationship of man to the mountains is a key issue. A reflection on this subject was undertaken by Robert Macfarlane in Mountains. A State of Mind (2003). The article juxtaposes the British writer's bestseller with Jacek Wozniak's dissertation Mountains Unmoved (1974). The Polish art historian writes about the discovery of mountains for culture from the earliest times to Romanticism. Macfarlane begins his story at this pivotal moment. The works are complimentary in this regard, and from them it is possible to reconstruct the history of fascination, which begins with reluctance and leads to an obsession that is often deadly and brings suffering. The authors perform a kind of anatomy of mountain passion, dissecting it: Wozniakowski proposes a typology of attitudes toward mountains made visible in culture, while Macfarlane catologizes the causes of interest in peaks and the most important issues related to them. Thus, the two approaches are complementary.
