The Meaning Associations of the Image of “Mirror” in Gülten Akın's Poems

Summary/Abstract: Gülten Akın, as one of the important names of Turkish literature, is a versatile artist who has written poems and works in other literary genres. One of the expression preferences of the poet, who skillfully uses symbol and image, which are indispensable elements of poetry, is the mirror. Mirror can be considered as a means of expression in Akın's poems in which various feelings and thoughts are reflected, made visible, realized and sometimes the meaning is made more obscure. It is possible to see the change in Akın's understanding of poetry in his poems in which he prefers the mirror. Especially in his poetry books titled Rüzgâr Saati, Kestim Kara Saçlarımı and Sığda, feelings and thoughts of youth and nature are at the center of his individualistic tendencies. In his later poems, on the other hand, social issues take place. The mirror, which was initially a means of expression of individual issues, begins to reflect a socialist sensibility by moving away from individuality with the evolution of poetry understanding to social tendencies. In this study, the meaning connotations of the mirror in the historical process are emphasized and the meaning and expression possibilities added to Gülten Akın's poems by the mirror image/symbol she prefers in her poems are tried to be interpreted/analyzed based on the expressive power she gained in oral and written narratives.
