CARPET PRAYER RUGS OF IGDIR REGION IN TERMS OF TECHNIQUE AND COMPOSITION

Summary/Abstract: It is known that Iğdır and its surroundings have been used as a settlement since prehistoric times and have hosted different cultures. The local hand-woven weavings of Iğdır, besides showing the same characteristics with many sample weavings woven in the surrounding provinces, is a province that has many exemplary works in weaving. Since our province of Iğdır is in a geography close to the Caucasus region, it has been under the influence of this region. The most common weavings in Iğdır are prayer rugs. The colors, decorations and composition richness used in carpet prayer rugs have become the language of nonverbal communication. The motifs on the carpets have survived to the present day by filtering from their historical adventure and still maintain their influence. In the research carried out in the region, it has been revealed by the researches that these carpets are no longer woven in homes and have succumbed to time. Although the art of weaving is practiced in public education centers, it is known that it is not enough. Carpet prayer rugs woven in the region are woven with the double shank knot technique, which we call the Turkish knot technique, which can technically be called coarse, and it is known that the yarns used are used with both root dyes and natural colors. Carpet prayer rugs detected in the region should be taken into inventory and studies should be carried out in this sense. In this article, the contributions of the region to the art of weaving in this sense, in terms of technique and composition, were investigated by examining the carpet prayer rugs belonging to Iğdır, and the analysis of the motifs was made.
