Summary/Abstract: The place of civics in lower secondary education is somewhat at odds with the demands that the current political, economic, and environmental situation places on citizens regarding their preparation for life. In this text, we have focused on analyzing approaches to civic education from an international perspective. We have analyzed the Czech practice of civic education from 1992 to the present based on the analysis of internationally discussed types of teaching civic education and basic social sciences and selected key curriculum documents. Using an illustrative analysis of selected textbooks’ content, we could point out problematic areas of the still valid curriculum and differences in content between the curriculum and practice.
