Summary/Abstract: The article offers an exploration of the concept of virtuosity and the different historical meanings of the term, the etymology as well as the relation to the compositional and performance practice. Situating J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations as a fulcrum into the discussion of those two practices as aspects of virtuosity, we are discussing the ways in which changing historical contexts make the term applicable to both the performative and compositional elements of the piece.
