Summary/Abstract: The study explores the purpose of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in the context of musicology by analysing the application of ChatGPT. This methodologically specific case study will examine how ChatGPT, as a shining example of user-friendly natural language processing (NLP), understanding (NLU), and generation (NLG) technology, can(not) contribute to musicological research, study, and/or writing about music. The goal is to examine whether there is a functional potential of this technology that could offer a deeper insight into the author’s prompts, which will result in blocks of text upon which an analysis of the application of ChatGPT will be performed. This research, among other things, aims to contribute to the wider discourse of artificial intelligence, and the role and (un)usability of artificial intelligence in the context of musicological studies and other humanistic disciplines.
