The importance of performative verbs in institutional discourse

Summary/Abstract: In this paper we aim to examine various classifications of performative verbs in themainstream literature in order to highlight their complex nature and role in any typeof discourse. In doing so, we shall consider a number of structural and functionalcharacteristics, such as: transparency, conventionalization, degree of explicitnessetc., with the help of which it can be explained why a particular verb may or may notreceive the label „performative”. Even though performative verbs are not agrammatical category in their own right, fields such as linguistic philosophy amndpragmatics gravitate around them, since they are essentially verbs that performcertain actions, rather than simply describing them (as conventional verbs do)
