Summary/Abstract: The present article makes a brief presentation of Mihail Sebastian’s Journal. Written in turbulent times, the Journal offers us not only the portrait of the writer, the Jew and the man Mihail Sebastian, but also the portrait of an anti-Semite Romania, torn between different political ideologies. The Journal turns out to be a valuable piece of writing both for a literary critic and for a historian, giving us a picture of an entire world in its darkest times. After making a short presentation of Sebastian’s biography, in order to understand the man behind the writer, we go on into analysing the diary as a literary genre in general and Sebastian’s diary in particular. Thus, our attention turns to the Journal itself as a document which creates the image of the writer and of his époque.
