Summary/Abstract: One of the most paradoxical spirits of his time, Paul Zarifopol has been intensely discussed by literary critics. Perceived as an exceptional, strange and premature apparition, his writings have both impressed and irritated. A complex personality of Romanian criticism and essayism, placed under the seal of multiple hypostases and perceived by literary criticism in terms of opposition, Paul Zarifopol not only represented the effervescent spirit of the time, devoted entirely to the pen, but he brought with him the whole example of a life lived out of the limelight, with trials and challenges, but which has risen by its intrinsic strength, by the model of courage and confidence it inspires. He dedicated his whole life to writing, he was both appreciated and criticized, but what has remained in his pages with the passage of time is precisely the verve and enthusiasm he made his creations with, making each letter vibrate according to its rhythm. The lifespan of his texts is prolonged by the passion with which he wrote, by his iconoclastic spirit sometimes pushed to extremes, by the erudition he conveyed in every sentence and by the authenticity of the ideas he projected in polemic games, stirring his opponents into real literary battles, concluded in frothy and tasty dialogues.
