Summary/Abstract: Recent technological advancements have paradoxically led to spiritual discomfort and stress due to rapid changes, potentially causing severe mental illnesses. This study explored the link between psychological mechanisms and the quality of life in type 2 diabetes patients. Diabetes mellitus is a major medical issue characterized by high blood glucose levels that damage various organs. Effective management requires both medication and psychological intervention. This research assessed defense mechanisms and quality of life in 33 type 2 diabetes patients, divided into two groups based on disease duration. Using the SF-36 questionnaire and the Lifestyle Index, the study found that intellectualization and denial were the primary defense mechanisms. Patients using intellectualization focused on theoretical aspects of diabetes to avoid emotional distress, while those using denial ignored symptoms and delayed medical consultation. SF-36 results indicated that patients rated their quality of life as below average, with physical functionality scoring highest and role limitations due to physical and emotional problems scoring lowest. Adopting substitution as a defense mechanism positively impacted perceived quality of life by promoting engagement in activities that enhance well-being and social interactions. The findings emphasize the importance of psychological support in managing diabetes, aiding patients in accepting and adhering to treatment.
