Summary/Abstract: This paper indicates the wider context of dealing with multiplication and division, that is the psychological complexity of the conceptual understanding behind the mathematical simplicity. The goal of this paper is to learn more about research that has been done in the field of multiplication and division in the last few decades. Firstly, the author provides an overview of the history of the terms multiplication and division. Then, a summary of different representations in multiplication and division is given as the basis for a wide range of theories and the analysis that is highlighted in the current studies and the selection summarized here, that is theoretical perspectives of Vergnaud, Schwartz and Kaput, Nesher, Fischbein, Bell and Greer. The results of relevant studies show that the generalization of multiplication and division beyond the levels of natural numbers requires additional reconstruction.
