A register of Payers of Hearth Tax in Lublin from the Year 1629

Summary/Abstract: Preserved in the municipal financial books a register of payers of hearth tax from the year 1629 for the first time mentions apart from the payers of the tax also adult members of the household and the servants. It allows to group the households according to categories and try to show big differences in the living conditions of the town’s population. On account of the diversity of the town’s society – the list excludes children, does not inform about the source of the townspeople‘s upkeep – the recorded information requires further confrontation with the data contained in municipal books and parish registers. Only after a reconstruction of the families’ composition and the establishment of the actual professions as well as the sources of the upkeep of particular people would the information from the register allow for a more detailed characteristics of the town’s society
