Summary/Abstract: After the student protests that led to the suspension of the academic year 1922-1923, their leaders, including Ion I. Moța, the son of the priest Ioan Moța from Orăștie, were to be involved in a series of trials throughout the years 1924 and 1925. During this period, the trials became the central subject of the newspaper Libertatea, edited by Priest Moța, who had been supporting the student movement from its early moments. The speech starts to significantly radicalize when the leaders of the student movements, including his son, were accused of conspiring against high-ranking state officials. This trial was to be the first in a series of three trials. During these moments, while young Moța was imprisoned, his father’s newspaper took an even stronger stance, dedicating itself almost entirely to the student cause. Throughout the arrests, regardless of the trial, the newspaper Libertatea conducted fundraising campaigns, resulting in the collection of large sums of money. Moreover, the newspaper attached increased importance to the three trials, detailing them extensively in special double issues. During Ion I. Moța’s trial, following Vernichescu’s shooting, there is an increase in criticism towards the authorities due to the postponement of the trial date, this more acerbic discourse can also be attributed to the frustrations arising from the temporary suspension of the newspaper. Additionally, at this moment, it can be observed an alignment with the National Christian Defense League founded by A.C Cuza, because young Moța himself received support from the League. In the case of the Turnu Severin trial, Libertatea engages in its most extensive support effort. In addition to fundraising, the newspaper starts publishing letters from Codreanu’s prison, which were also printed at Libertatea’s printing press, in a booklet. Priest Moța not only announced himself as Codreanu’s defender but also conducted a significant mobilization effort for more defenders through his newspaper. At this point, Libertatea had converted from being a popular newspaper, as it referred to itself, to a newspaper that principally supported the cause of the students, engaging in their support. In addition to the trials, the newspaper supported the construction of a student dormitory, collecting donations until the project’s completion.
