Intergenerational Fairness in Family Policy: A Contribution to the Discussion

Summary/Abstract: The goal of the article is to analyze the effects of entangling family policy in debates on fertility rate and shifting attention to population issues, primarily reproductive issues, and indicate the change in emphasis in discussions on intergenerational fairness in the context of family policy. The research question relates to the consequences for family policy of the emphasis on the prospective dimension of intergenerational fairness reduced to pronatalism. The article relies on the analysis of selected scientific texts and a secondary analysis of available empirical research results. The need to build a family policy strategy addressed to young people “on the verge of parenthood” is emphasized as consistent with other public policies. It is also necessary to factor in the alarming figures of Polish family policy strategies demonstrating young people’s lack of faith that the government’s political decisions will cater to their interests and that public policies that are fair for future generations can be created.
