European Citizens’ Initiative

Summary/Abstract: The European Citizens’ Initiative is one of the instruments of participatory democracy within the European Union. It allows citizens of the EU to ask the European Commission to submit a draft legal act on matters they consider important. In particular, this instrument aims to increase citizens’ participation in the governance of the EU. The article assesses the mechanism in question, based on the conclusions drawn from an analysis of the Commission’s activities to date in response to initiatives which have received the support of at least one million Union citizens.
