Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes, based on local archival funds and reference books, the impact that food, alcoholism and housing had on the way of life at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries in the North of Oltenia. Considered true “everyday structures” by the historian Fernand Braudel, they influenced the health and longevity of the inhabitants of Northern Oltenia. From the information identified so far, a certain modernizing offensive of the state on the urban and rural space alike emerges clearly. The decrease in mortality could only be done by identifying the factors that made it possible and eliminating them. Diseases of poverty such as pellagra, deficient diet despite a relevant physical effort for the Romanian peasants, alcoholism which led to cases of drunkenness and murder (the latter, however, much reduced), falsification of drinks with consequences on the health of the population, the type of housing, their hygiene and sanitation, the sometimes insufficient intervention of the authorities in this regard, the presence of medical personnel and its effectiveness are important elements taken into account.
