Summary/Abstract: A year after the outbreak of the Second World War, Romania, although still neutral, had lost a third of its territory. The land cessions of June-September 1940 had effects on the Romanian university system. Numerous students and professors from the ceded territories took refuge in Bucharest or Sibiu. Some of them continued their studies or university careers in Bucharest at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. This article presents the effects that the territorial cessions of 1940 had on the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, University of Bucharest. It investigates how the refugee professors and students integrated into the academic community and, on the other hand, the reaction of the professors of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters who did not go through the experience of refuge towards the territorial cessions. The paper also reveals the political discussions held by Bessarabian and Bucovinian refugee professors in the period between Romania's entry into the Second World War (June 22, 1941) and the beginning of 1944, when the front was approaching the country's borders.
