Summary/Abstract: The proposed contribution discusses memories of Romanian Second World War veterans recorded in the period 1995-2001 mainly during ethnological rural field researches. Such memories have been preserved in oral circulation in the repertoire of their owners for almost half a century and consequently, they are subjected to complex processing and mediation.Expressing a cultural language and expressed in the patterns of folk narratives, oral recollections represent valuable testimonies of the manner in which native (traditional) cultures of people mould perception and appropriation of a different and alienating culture such as war culture.Corroborating a brief review of the anthropological meaning of armed conflicts with three fragments selected out of the accounts recorded during the field research mentioned above, the study regards war as a liminal experience, that induces irreversible transformations to people and communities engaged in it.
