Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the article is to present and discuss the lexical material collected among five-year-old children with respect to understanding and interpretation of phraseological units with components referring to the ear, eye, nose, tongue and heart. The choice of phraseological units was dictated by the intention to touch upon the issues that are close to the child, which they encounter on a daily basis, and which are preserved in the linguistic tradition of sayings. The subject of phraseologisms was also intended to encourage children to formulate free statements about them. The study demonstrates how children interpret selected metatextual phrases and how they define them using language.
