A Tale From the Lake

Summary/Abstract: (Az igazság gyertyái. Marosvásárhelyi Nemzeti Színház, Tompa Miklós Társulat). The premiere of the Tompa Miklós Company of the National Theatre of Târgu Mureș entitled Az igazság gyertyái (The Candles of Truth) is based on a new play by local contemporary playwright Csaba Székely, set in the years following the introduction of the Jewish laws, and takes place in Bözödújfalu/Bezidu Nou, a Transylvanian village that would later become known as a symbol of the so-called communist rural systematization that resulted in village destruction. In her review, Ildikó Bálint considers the unconditional respect for the text on the part of the theatre makers a weakness of the production. It hampered conveniently not only the director’s ideas but also the actors’ performance.
