Summary/Abstract: The main character of the essay Dark Night of Love is unrequited love. It is a type of love inseparable from suffering. Although suffering in such love always occurs, the way individuals communicate can magnify it. This happens when people choose understatements instead of sincere conversation. The purpose of this article is to show how the lack of open communication affects the experiences of the characters in Dark Night of Love, complicating their references to each other and causing suffering. By communication here we mean both verbal and non-verbal communication, including actions. In particular, we will focus on verbal communication as the one that is most lacking in the relationship between the characters. The events depicted in the essay are literary fiction, but they illustrate situations in which too little attention is paid to clear communication. The importance of this communication is particularly important in close relationships, as they affect the sense of meaning in life and the experience of happiness.
