Summary/Abstract: The article proposes a reading of Sugars by Dorota Kotas – a story about a girl on the autism spectrum who, as a non-neurotypical and non-heteronormative person, incurs the high emotional costs of double exclusion (mainly in the field of family relationships), and yet saves a whole set of features that allow her to fulfill herself in a creative and personal dimension. From the perspective of girl studies, the narrative of Sugars presents girlhood not so much as a stage of a woman’s life, situated between childhood and adulthood, but as the state of independence she achieves from social norms, the pleasure of being simply herself without concern for the requirements and expectations of the environment.
