Summary/Abstract: In 2019, the Bulgarian Society of Endocrinology and the Ministry of Health published "Recommendations for good clinical practice in obesity". There are many different definitions that define the essence of the problem, but according to the Society's current definition: Obesity is a metabolic disease with an epidemic character and is a leading cause of mortality and disability in Europe and the world. Obesity is a heterogeneous multifactorial syndrome of excessive deposition of adipose tissue in the body, which adversely affects health. Obesity is a chronic disease caused by a complex but interplay of genetic, metabolic and environmental factors (social, cultural, psychological, behavioral and social factors) leading to an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. It is the main reason for the appearance of a number of risk factors and chronic diseases such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes, causing cardiovascular complications, increased risk of a number of cancers and high mortality. Therefore, weight control plays a major role in the management of cardiovascular risk factors and their consequences.
